Noida: The city's air quality slipped to 'very poor' at 329 on Sunday, a day before Diwali, against 293 in the 'poor' category a day prior. Greater Noida also noted a slight deterioration but air quality remained 'poor' with an AQI of 287 from Saturday's 248. Neighbouring Ghaziabad was worst off, remaining in the 'very poor' category on Sunday at 334 - a slight deterioration from 324 the previous day.Meanwhile, Delhi's AQI was recorded in the 'poor' category on Sunday at 296. Noida's station-wise data showed that Sector 125 recorded an AQI of 363 with PM2.5 at 339 and PM10 at 363, Sector 116 recorded an AQI of 357 with PM2.5 at 345 and PM10 at 357, and Sector 1 recorded an AQI of 329 with PM2.5 at 329 and PM10 at 299 - placing all three stations in the 'very poor' category. The wind is expected from the southeast with speeds up to 6 kmph in the morning and increase slightly to under 8 kmph by afternoon.The impact of additional emissions due to firecrackers on Diwali is likely to stay in the air through most of the week due to calm wind conditions, with no respite from extremely toxic air likely until at least Friday, weather analysts said.According to the forecast by the Air Quality Early Warning System (AQEWS), further deterioration of air quality to the higher end of the 'very poor' category is expected by Diwali day, and to 'severe' levels by Tuesday."The air quality is very likely to be in the 'severe' category from Tuesday till Wednesday -- in case of enhanced emissions from firecrackers," an AQEWS bulletin stated.Meanwhile, Stage-II of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) came into effect across Delhi-NCR on Sunday, with stricter measures now being implemented in addition to those already enforced under Stage-I.Municipal bodies are required to intensify mechanical road sweeping and water sprinkling, especially along heavy-traffic corridors and pollution hotspots. The use of dust suppressants on unpaved roads is also mandated, along with strict checks on open burning of waste and illegal dumping of debris. Industrial units operating on unapproved fuels face immediate closure, and all clusters must shift to cleaner options like PNG. The use of diesel generator sets is prohibited, except for emergency and essential services such as hospitals or elevators.To prevent further pollution, power utilities must ensure uninterrupted electricity supply so that DG sets remain unused, while enforcement agencies conduct regular inspections for compliance. Transport departments and local police are tasked with tightening traffic management, penalising visibly polluting vehicles, and verifying Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates.Local bodies have also been directed to identify and manage dust hotspots, deploying anti-smog guns at least three times a day in those areas. Citizens are urged to cooperate by reducing outdoor activities, especially for vulnerable groups like children and the elderly, and to prefer public transport, carpooling, or remote work when possible.
