Hyderabad: Sheikh Riyaz, who had been on the run after allegedly stabbing Nizamabad district police constable Pramod, was finally apprehended on Sunday afternoon in Sarangapur after nearly two days of drama. On Saturday night, Riyaz had a lucky escape from the police dragnet, even though warning shots were fired into the air.Riyaz, a habitual offender and wanted in vehicle theft cases, was caught accidentally. Minutes prior to police laying hands on him, he allegedly attacked another individual with a knife.The district police, who were on a manhunt for Riyaz, said that policemen witnessed a scuffle between two individuals. Acting swiftly, the already alert personnel approached the scene and identified one of them as the wanted suspect, Riyaz. The incident occurred in an open area under the jurisdiction of VI Town police station, located five kilometres from Nizamabad town.However, by then, Riyaz had allegedly attacked Asif, a passer-by, with a knife. "On witnessing the commotion, nearby officers intervened and discovered that one of the two individuals was Riyaz. Asif sustained bleeding injuries as a result of the murderous attack," said Nizamabad police.During the altercation, both Asif and Riyaz were injured and taken to hospital. Asif's injuries were reported to be non-serious. On Friday night, Riyaz allegedly stabbed constable Pramod after the latter took custody of the former and was shifting him to the police station on a bike. Riyaz, who was seated between the victim and his cousin, suddenly pulled out a knife from his footwear and stabbed Pramod in the chest. Sub-inspector Vittal Rao, who was following Pramod on a different bike, tried to intervene, but Riyaz injured Vittal's finger by attacking him with a knife. Explaining the sequence of events that unfolded while Riyaz was on the run, sources privy to the investigation told TOI that after committing the murder, Riyaz called a friend and managed to access a motorbike without a number plate. On Saturday, district police tracked his movements and discovered he was travelling on the bike, prompting them to intensify the search.Upon spotting the police, Riyaz abandoned the vehicle and jumped into a nearby canal, while officers fired warning shots. Police believe he later boarded a lorry and escaped. Near an industrial unit, while crawling underneath a parked lorry, he was spotted by Asif, who questioned him. Riyaz then attacked Asif, causing grievous injuries. Asif was later shifted to Gandhi Hospital.
