Noida: For the second day in a row, Ghaziabad recorded very poor air quality, which was also the worst in the country, even as Noida and Greater Noida breathed marginally better. On Friday, Ghaziabad's AQI was recorded at 306, showing no improvement from 307 logged a day ago. In Loni, located along the Delhi border and home to nearly 450 industrial units, AQI tipped towards the severe range at 350 at 4pm. The area was among the six pollution hotspots -- along with Sahibabad, Raj Nagar Extension, Bhopura-Delhi Border, Vasundhara, and Sidharth Vihar -- identified for the past two years for seeing high particulate matter concentration during winter. A survey, undertaken last Oct, showed traffic congestion, industrial emissions, road dust and dumping of waste as the major sources of pollution. The situation has, locals said, remained the same year after year, with the authorities waking up annually every winter to crackdown on polluting units and open garbage burning. The level of hazardous PM2.5 -- particulate matter 2.5 microns or less in diameter -- breached 500 micrograms per cubic metre at 6pm on Thursday, against the permissible limit of 15 micrograms per cubic metre. The area's 24-hour average PM2.5 concentration was 331, and PM10 level 350, CPCB data showed. The AQI range recorded by the three other monitoring stations oscillated between poor and very poor -- Sanjay Nagar at 301, Indirapuram 289 and Vasundhara 288.CPCB data showed a marginal improvement in Noida's air quality -- from 278 on Thursday to 228 on the day. On the ground, the situation was hardly any different, with a layer of hazy enveloping the city since morning, even as Noida Authority said 14 teams inspected 20 locations across the city and deployed 20 water tankers and 10 truck-mounted anti-smog guns that covered around 120 km of roads.Greater Noida's AQI also improved to 246 from Thursday's 272, also in the poor range. At 254, Delhi recorded its worst air quality index of the season against 245 and 233, on Thursday and Wednesday.Station-wise data showed that Noida's Sector 125 station recorded an AQI of 340 in the very poor category, with PM2.5 levels at 301 and PM10 at 340 at 4 pm. Sector 116 recorded an AQI of 278, Sector 1 stood at 269, and Sector 62 at 227 - all three in the poor category. In Greater Noida, Knowledge Park V recorded an AQI of 254 and Knowledge Park III recorded 241, both falling under the poor category. According to the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), NCR cities recorded a mainly clear sky on Thursday, with predominant surface winds coming from the north at speeds of 5-10 kmph during the afternoon. The wind speed dropped below 8 kmph in the evening. IITM has forecast clear skies with mist and haze during morning hours for Saturday. Temperatures are expected to range between 32 degrees Celsius and 34°C during the day and 18°C to 20°C at night. The surface wind is likely to blow from the northwest at up to 6 kmph in the morning, gradually increasing to below 10 kmph in the afternoon before dropping again to below 6 kmph in the evening.
