Noida: The worsening air quality trend continued on Wednesday as Noida's 24-hour average air quality index (AQI) hit 318, breaching the 'very poor' category for the first time this season. This was also the country's worst AQI to be recorded on the day. The last time the city's AQI breached the very poor mark was on Jan 4, when it touched 365.A visible smog layer hung over the region throughout the day, with 7x sectors and areas off the Noida expressway seeing high concentrations of PM2.5 and 10. The situation is likely to get worse in the coming days, with pollution control board officials attributing the worsening air quality to a combination of factors, including the withdrawal of the monsoon, dip in temperatures, reduced wind speeds and an increase in both local and regional pollution sources.According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the level of hazardous PM2.5 -- particulate matter 2.5 microns or less in diameter -- was recorded at 368 micrograms per cubic metre at 8am on Wednesday, against the permissible limit of 15 micrograms per cubic metre at the Sector 125 station that monitors areas along the expressway. The station's average AQI was 374 at 4pm, up from 312 a day ago. PM10, the major pollutant, touched 500 micrograms per cubic metre between midnight and 4am.At Sector 116 station, the PM2.5 level peaked at 357 micrograms per cubic metre at 9am, while the average AQI was 339 till 4pm. Sectors 1 and 62 stations registered AQIs of 284 and 283, respectively, placing them in the poor category.In Greater Noida, AQI also slipped from 194 in the moderate category to 263 in the poor range, with Knowledge Park V station recording an average AQI of 283 and Knowledge Park III at 243, both in the poor. Ghaziabad, however, saw a marginal improvement, recording an AQI of 254 against 261 a day ago, but remained in the "poor" category. Within the city, Loni recorded the highest AQI at 299, followed by Indirapuram at 249, Vasundhara at 246, and Sanjay Nagar at 220 -- all in the "poor" range. Delhi's average AQI hit 233, up from 211. In response to the deteriorating air quality, CAQM implemented Stage I of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), a set of emergency measures aimed at preventing further deterioration of air quality across Delhi-NCR, on Tuesday.Noida Authority general manager SP Singh said teams have been deployed across the city to ensure compliance with Stage 1 measures. "To combat pollution, 20 tankers are sprinkling treated water from sewage treatment plants over 63 km of roads, while 12 mechanical sweepers are cleaning 340 km of road stretches. We have also intensified inspections across various sectors and construction sites to issue fines for GRAP violations," Singh said. In Greater Noida, four tractors were seized and fined Rs 50,000 each for dumping garbage at unauthorised locations.However, manual sweeping of roads was seen on several sectoral roads, even as craters and uncovered construction material on roadsides continued to kick up dust.The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) forecast haze and mist on Thursday morning, with southwest winds reaching up to 6 kmph. By afternoon, winds are expected to shift northwest at below 10 kmph, before dropping to under 5 kmph from the northeast in the evening -- a pattern unfavourable for pollutant dispersion. Mahesh Palawat of Skymet said the haziness might increase around Diwali due to calm winds and daytime temperatures might rise marginally due to the aggravating AQI.On Wednesday, the maximum temperature was 32.5 degrees Celsius while the minimum was 18.3, both a notch below normal. The maximum temperature may be 31-33 degrees Celsius on Thursday.
