New Delhi: The monsoon officially withdrew from the Delhi region on Sept 24. Or did it? Six day later on Tuesday, the city saw high-intensity rainfall that caught people unawares. And what is more, weather analysts expect more rain in the coming days. The base weather station at Safdarjung logged 37.8mm of rainfall until 5.30pm on Tuesday, which will be included in Oct's data, thus taking the month's net rainfall past its monthly average of 15.1mm. Ayanagar in south-west Delhi recorded 71.2mm, while precipitation at Palam measured 21.8mm, Ridge 29.8mm, Rajghat 40.5mm, Pusa 36mm and Mayur Vihar, 35mm. So has the rainy season really ended? Why then has such substantial precipitation been recorded at the various weather stations? While experts explained that that post-monsoon rains were common, current weather conditions are such that the city may in fact see patchy rains until Oct 7. It may even rain on Dussehra on Oct 2. In 2022, the city logged 74.3mm of rainfall on Oct 9 after the monsoon withdrew on Sept 29. In 2021 too, rainfall on Oct 18, ten days after the withdrawal of the monsoon, measured 87.9mm.According to Mahesh Palawat of Skymet, Tuesday's rainfall resulted from the confluence of two moisture-laden winds above Delhi and Haryana: an easterly coming from the Bay of Bengal and a southwesterly from the Arabian Sea. "For 2-3 days, the low-level easterly winds have brought moistures and high humidity to the region. At the upper level altitude of about 5.4km, southwesterly winds from the Arabian Sea blew in," said Palawat. "Their confluence over Delhi and Haryana led to instability and formation of thunder clouds and eventually rain. There are chances that the rain may continue for a few days." He added that a western disturbance and a low-pressure area was also developing over the Bay of Bengal which may create scope for rain later this week. "The low-pressure area is moving northward and may reach north Madhya Pradesh. This will cause cyclonic circulation by Oct 6, meaning chances of rain across northwest India," said Palawat.According to IMD scientist Krishna Mishra, there is a "well-marked low-pressure area over the Gulf of Kutch, and a trough runs from this well-marked low-pressure area towards southeast UP. Another trough runs from this low-pressure area to Northwest Rajasthan in lower tropospheric levels. The rainfall may be attributed to these two troughs facilitating moisture supply from both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal."Tuesday rain is recorded as 'moderate'. In IMD categorisation, rainfall up to 15.5mm is considered 'light', between 15.6 and 64.4mm 'moderate', and between 64.5 and 115.5mm, 'heavy'. Although the southwest monsoon withdrew from the region after dumping 902.6mm of water between June 29 and Sept 24, or 40.9% in excess of average rainfall, instances of post-monsoon rain are not isolated or rare. There was a slight drop in the maximum temperature, with the reading at Safdarjung being 34.3 degrees Celsius against 37.5 degrees Celsius a day earlier.
