Nagpur: After three deaths, including that of a 14-year-old schoolgirl, in just two days on the Mankapur flyover, the traffic police decided to allow only one-way traffic on the side of the bridge which is open for motorists while the other side remains shut for repairs. A notification was issued in this regard on Monday evening. It will remain in effect from September 16 to September 30, when the flyover repair work is expected to be completed. According to the notification issued by DCP (traffic) Lohit Matani, traffic diversion is needed as the Faras Chowk to Kalpana Talkies side of the flyover is shut for repairs. "Traffic moving from Faras Chowk to Kalpana Talkies will use the flyover while vehicles moving from Kalpana Talkies Square to Faras Chowk will be diverted to the service road through Mankapur Square," reads the notification. For almost four months now, two-way traffic has been moving on Kalpana Talkies to Faras Chowk side of the flyover causing many accidents. Initially, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) contractor did not even take permission to close one side of the flyover.On September 12, a school van collided head-on with a school bus on the flyover, leading to the death of Saanvi and the van driver. On Sunday, a biker was killed after being hit by a car in the early hours on the same flyover. While speaking with TOI on Sunday, Saanvi's father Devendra Khobragade urged authorities to make the flyover one-way until the repair work is completed.The accidents sparked outrage among parents and locals who blamed authorities for not taking proper safety measures on the flyover. TOI was the first to highlight the issue and the prolonged delay in repair works.Road safety activists and commuters have welcomed the latest decision to restrict traffic flow on one side of the flyover. They said this will significantly reduce the risk of fatal crashes. "Had such steps been taken earlier, lives would not have been lost," they said. Local residents are demanding that NHAI expedite repair work and open the entire flyover at the earliest to resolve the crisis.
