Nahan, Sep 13 (UNI) The plight of stray dogs in the Nahan Nagar Palika area reflects glaring neglect, with neither vaccination nor sterilization drives conducted for the past one and a half years. This inaction has left hundreds of dogs vulnerable to diseases, while residents face growing safety concerns. Despite the Animal Birth Control (ABC) rules mandating annual sterilization and vaccination of stray dogs, the municipal council has failed to comply. The rules also require tagging treated dogs and maintaining records of their numbers. Shockingly, in 2024- 25, only nine dogs were registered with the Municipal Council. In the current year, out of 21 applications for registration, only two have been processed. The situation is alarming, as many stray dogs in the town show visible signs of illness. Animal welfare groups argue that timely sterilization could help control aggressive behavior and population growth. However, the Nagar Parishad has not even conducted a proper survey to assess the number of stray dogs. According to non-governmental estimates, there are several hundred strays in the town, most left to wander the streets without health checks. Records reveal that the last sterilization drive was carried out in March- April 2024, covering just 65 dogs. Since then, no initiative has been taken. Meanwhile, many pet owners in the town are keeping dogs without registering them, further violating ABC norms. Senior Executive Officer of Nagar Parishad, Sanjay Kumar, admitted the lapse but informed that the council recently passed a proposal on August 26 to resume vaccination and sterilization in coordination with the Veterinary Department. "The drive is likely to begin by the end of September or the first week of October," he said. Until then, the streets of Nahan remain dotted with unmonitored stray dogs, posing both health risks and safety concerns.
Mumbai: After the Supreme Court decides to remove stray dogs from the streets of Delhi, people doubt if the reciprocation would be seen in other places, including Mumbai.
