Bengaluru, Aug 13 (UNI) In a shocking statement on the floor of the Karnataka Legislative Council, JDS MLC SL Bhojegowda today claimed that at least 2,800 stray dogs were deliberately poisoned and buried in coconut groves and coffee estates to address the growing stray dog menace. Bhojegowda said the dogs were fed poisoned meat and highlighted the risks faced by children from economically disadvantaged families. "Children of judges, ministers, and legislators, who travel by cars, may not be affected. But children from poor families, who walk to school, face the danger of being attacked by stray dogs. The menace is prevalent even in Bengaluru's Cubbon Park," he stated. His remarks come shortly after the Supreme Court of India issued an order for Delhi-NCR authorities to remove all stray dogs from residential areas within eight weeks and house them in shelters. The court directed officials to set up a helpline for dog bite complaints, ensuring offending animals are picked up within four hours, and warned of contempt proceedings against anyone obstructing the capture drive. Bhojegowda's admission has sparked concern over animal welfare and the legality of such measures, raising questions about the management of stray dogs in urban and rural Karnataka.
