COIMBATORE: A total of 1,388 Lord Ganesh idols were immersed in various waterbodies in Coimbatore district on Friday.More than 400 idols installed by various right-wing organizations in Coimbatore city were immersed in Kurichi tank, Singanallur tank, Kuniyamuthur tank and Vellakinaru tank. The highest number of idols were immersed in Vellakinaru tank, with a total of 128 idols while 83 idols were immersed in Kurichi tank.The city police permitted the installation of 725 Ganesh idols and deployed 2,200 police personnel, including 200 from the Rapid Action Force (RAF), as part of the security measures for the celebrations and immersions of idols. Police installed CCTV cameras to monitor the processions.Within the city limits, the Hindu Munnani organization installed 295 idols, Indu Makkal Katchi installed 80 idols, Bharat Sena 51 idols, BJP 21 idols and Shiv Sena 28 idols.In the jurisdiction of the Coimbatore rural police, 970 idols were immersed in various tanks and rivers. A total of 38 processions by various organizations were conducted for the immersion of Ganesh idols at Mettupalayam, Pollachi, Karamadai, Annur, Sulur, Perur, Anaimalai and Alandurai.Police granted permission to install 1,628 Ganesh idols in various parts of the Coimbatore rural jurisdiction. They deployed 1,528 personnel for the safety of processions and immersions of Ganesh idols.In a Hindu Munnani meeting held at Thudiyalur, former BJP state president K Annamalai said, "Ganesh Chaturthi celebration and processions are a 132-year-old tradition. Every year, lakhs of Ganesh idols are installed in various parts of the country. The Ganesh Chaturthi festival is related to our life. As we are born, grow, live and die, every year we make Lord Ganesh idols with clay soil, keep idols in 'Ganesh pandal' (temporary altars), and we immerse the idols and give back the soil to the earth itself." He added that the state govt and the police were opposing the Ganesh Chaturthi processions. "We have even seen police beating people who participate in the processions. Last year, in Thudiyalur, there was a dispute between people and police, and devotees who participated in the procession were attacked by police. Even though the number of idols installed here in Thudiyalur increased from 230 to 268 this year, the govt imposes a lot of rules to install Ganesh idols in new places. The organizer who wants to install Ganesh idols should get permission from more than 10 officers," he added.He requested the youth to spend at least 15 days cleaning up the tanks and ponds in their area. Hindu Munnani leaders should encourage their members to clean the waterbodies in the state and conserve them, he said.
