Thane: Quick thinking and timely intervention by two local youths saved the lives of two people trapped inside a near-submerged car at the waterlogged Nilje-Ghesar railway underpass in Thane district on Tuesday. A video of the two bravehearts swimming into the flooded underpass and rescuing the SUV driver and passenger has gone viral.Officials said the car got stranded in floodwaters around 4pm, as it unsuccessfully attempted to cross the underpass. It tilted dangerously with its bonnet submerged, while the rear end remained slightly above water. Inside the vehicle, the driver and passenger were unable to escape as the water levels rose around them. Onlookers panicked, but the two youths immediately jumped into the murky floodwater. They swam towards the car, and one of them climbed onto the vehicle's roof to push the elevated portion down. Their quick presence of mind helped stabilise the vehicle, allowing the stranded duo to roll down the windows and escape. Both victims were brought to safety, leaving the submerged vehicle behind.Constables from the nearest police station rushed to the spot and assisted in the rescue. A senior Thane police officer confirmed the sequence of events and lauded the bravery of the two local youths, whose daring act drew applause from the crowd gathered at the scene.Authorities have closed the Nilje-Ghesar underpass until the rainwater recedes and warned motorists against driving through submerged stretches.
