Incessant rain over 2 days leaves several areas in city waterlogged | Bhubaneswar News - Times of India

Bhubaneswar: Incessant rainfall for over two days, which caused severe waterlogging, threw life out of gear in several parts of the capital city on Friday. Residents of several areas were left stranded in their homes as rainwater mixed with wastewater from nearby clogged drains gushed in. The most affected localities were Badagada, Laxmi Sagar, Nandan Vihar and Bomikhal, where clogged drains caused the rainwater to overflow and enter houses. Several people had to vacate their homes in anticipation of flooding."A few hours of rain and our houses were inundated. This is a recurring issue and despite several complaints, the civic body has taken no action. Insufficient drainage system is the primary cause of waterlogging," said Laxmi Sagar resident Pratima Nanda.Nanda locked their home and shifted to a neighbour's house on the second floor of the same building on Thursday night. "There's knee-deep water on our floor. How could we stay?" asked Nanda. The helpline number of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) was flooded with complaints of waterlogging from different localities. According to sources, the 1929 helpline number received about 100 distress calls in a span of 24 hours.Responding to the complaints, BMC rushed teams late Thursday night to Badagada, Sabar Sahi and Laxmi Sagar and attended to the distress calls. At Badagada, the BMC team cut two embankments of the Badagada canal to ensure the smooth flow of rainwater.Commuters faced severe inconvenience too as continued rain left important thoroughfares, including the Cuttack-Puri state highway, inundated for hours. Commuters faced difficulties navigating through the submerged roads."Service lanes of Bomikhal flyover always get inundated after a few hours of rain. But this time, I saw the stretch was submered up to Rasulgarh Square near Maa Kochilai Haat, which has never happened before," Girija Sahoo, a resident of Mancheswar, said.Mayor Sulochana Das, who visited many inundated areas, including Sabar Sahi, on Thursday night to supervise the operation, said that BMC swiftly attended to the calls and resolved the issues."We have identified the problematic areas and stationed the pumps beforehand. We also responded to the distress calls and sent our teams to deal with the waterlogging. We are also preparing a drainage master plan to deal with the issues permanently," she said.
