Bhubaneswar/Balasore: With the Subarnarekha and Jalaka rivers flowing above the danger level and the Budhabalanga in spate following incessant rain for the last two days, state govt has geared up to tackle the flood situation in Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts. Over 7,000 people were evacuated to safer places while Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) and fire services teams were deployed in vulnerable areas. Floodwaters from the Subarnarekha, Budhabalanga and Jalaka have inundated connecting roads across the region. Road links were severed, while electricity and telecommunication services were disrupted. Hundreds of residents from riverside villages were relocated to safer locations, including cyclone shelters and schools.According to the Balasore administration, 46 villages across Basta, Baliapal, Jaleswar, Bhograi, Remuna and Sadar blocks, including eight wards of Jaleswar Municipality, were affected by floods. A total of 2,916 people were evacuated to 17 shelter homes. At least 13 kitchens were opened to provide food to the affected.In Mayurbhanj district, 77 gram panchayats were affected by floods in the Budhabalanga and Subarnarekha. Over 5,000 people were evacuated to safer places, and 44 dry kitchens are providing food to the affected. Traffic movement was disrupted between Udala and Remuna as a bridge was submerged.According to a bulletin issued at 3 pm by the water resources department, the Subarnarekha was flowing steady at 11.56 metres at Rajghat, well above its danger level of 10.36m. The Budhabalanga was flowing at 6.72m at NH-5, Govindpur, below its danger mark of 8.13m, and showing a falling trend. Similarly, the Jalaka was flowing at 6.71m at Mathani, slightly above its danger mark of 6.50m, but has been in a falling trend.Central Water Commission (CWC) forecasted a peak flood in the Subarnarekha at Rajghat at 10.36m by 6 am on Tuesday, albeit with a decreasing trend. Authorities said that water released from the Galudiha barrage and Chandil dam in Jharkhand into the Subarnarekha contributed to the temporary rise.Revenue and disaster management minister Sarat Pujari said the flood situation is under control. "Rainfall in the upper catchment areas of Jharkhand has reduced, and the intensity of rainfall in Odisha districts has also gone down. With the sea conditions normal, water discharge is on. The district administrations have been asked to make all necessary adjustments for people in vulnerable areas," he said.Revenue divisional commissioner (central) B Parameswaran and Balasore collector Suryawanshi Mayur Vikas, along with other senior officials, visited the flood-affected areas of Basta, Jaleswar, Baliapal and Bhograi to monitor the situation. Parameswaran directed officials to ensure all necessary arrangements for evacuation and flood management. "Water levels of all rivers have started receding. We are closely monitoring the situation, and senior officials have been deployed across various locations.
