Panaji: In a positive sign, 82 percent of mothers exclusively breastfed their children for the first six months, with the same being higher in rural areas with 87.3 percent compared to urban areas with 80 percent, a study by Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC), Bambolim revealed. Interestingly, the study also found that exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) for six months reported in the state was higher than Goa's National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) estimate of 61.4 percent. The 'Study of Breastfeeding Practices in Urban and Rural Settings in Goa,' published last month in the RGUHS National Journal of Public Health (2025), was carried out by Dr Vidhya Halpati and Dr Rajat Sawant under the guidance of Dr Amit Dias, Assistant Professor at the Department of Community Medicine, GMC. The study revealed knowledge-practice gaps and highlighted the state of breastfeeding practices and the urgent need for stronger support systems. "It was observed that 81.3 percent of mothers felt there was inadequate provision for breastfeeding in public places, and 77.14 percent of working mothers reported that insufficient maternity leave negatively affected breastfeeding," the study said, adding that 9.3 percent of mothers had no knowledge of breastfeeding benefits. The study also found that 91.3 percent of babies received colostrum, and 22 percent of mothers still gave prelacteal feeds, a practice discouraged due to the risk of infection. "Only 59 percent of working mothers got maternity leave; two mothers had to quit their jobs as they were not eligible to get leave. The most common reason for not practicing EBF was perceived to be insufficient milk (10 percent)," it said. Dias said that breastfeeding is the easiest, healthiest, and most sustainable way to feed an infant. "It requires no preparation, no packaging, and no cost. Yet, our systems are failing to support mothers adequately. The data show us that knowledge is not the only barrier, but attitudes and environments also play a critical role," he said. He said that for sustainable breastfeeding, Goa needs policies that provide adequate maternity leave, ensure privacy in public places, and encourage family and workplace support. Halpati, currently working with the Directorate of Health Services (DHS), said that the study recommended scaling up breastfeeding education in antenatal and immunisation clinics. "There is a need to promote breastfeeding-friendly public and workplace policies, including lactation rooms and flexible work options. Additionally, the target should be low-income and working mothers with community support initiatives and home visits," added Sawant. Dr Dias said, "As we mark Breastfeeding Awareness Week 2025, this study urges stakeholders, including health workers, policymakers, employers, and communities, to come together to create an enabling environment for breastfeeding and also make all hospitals baby-friendly by adopting the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative."

New Delhi, Jul 15 (PTI) South Asia has achieved its highest-ever immunization coverage for children, with notable progress in India and Nepal, according to new data released on Tuesday by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF for 2024. India reduced its number of zero-dose children -- those who have not received a single vaccine -- by 43 per cent, from 1.6 million in 2023 to 0.9 million in 2024.
