Patna: Despite heavy rain witnessed in several districts in the past few days, Bihar till date has recorded 41% deficit rainfall in July. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier predicted less than normal rainfall for July in most places of the state.The month typically receives an average of 340.5 mm of rainfall, but this year's shortfall reflects a persistent downward trend. July has seen below-normal rainfall for four consecutive years -- with deficits of 29% in 2024, 48% in 2023, 60% in 2022 and 26% in 2021. The only recent exception was in 2020, which recorded a 27% surplus.The capital city, Patna, has also experienced fluctuating rainfall over the past few years. While the city witnessed a record 383.5 mm of rainfall in July this year, previous years saw much lower figures -- 222.6 mm in 2021, 159.4 mm in 2022, 200.5 mm in 2023 and 167 mm in 2024.According to the forecast released by the IMD, normal rainfall is expected in most parts of the state. The average normal rainfall for Aug in Bihar would be 271.9 mm, it said.Meanwhile, the weather department has also issued an orange alert of very heavy rainfall in Kishanganj, Araria, Purnia, Katihar and Madhepura on Saturday. A heavy rainfall alert has also been issued for Supaul, Bhagalpur, Munger, Samastipur, Khagaria and Begusarai. Additionally, an orange alert for thunderstorms and lightning has been issued for all districts of the state. Moderate to heavy showers are likely to continue across the state for the next three days.
