Mumbai: Bombay High Court has now got its fifth bench, located in Kolhapur. The HC bench at Kolhapur will start functioning from Aug 18, as stated in a notification issued on Friday."I, Alok Aradhe, Chief Justice of the High Court of Judicature at Bombay, with the approval of the Governor of Maharashtra, appoint Kolhapur as a place at which Judges and Division Courts of the High Court may also sit, with effect from August 18, 2025," the notification dated Aug 1 said. The other benches of the HC are at Nagpur, Aurangabad, and Goa, apart from the principal bench in Mumbai.Lawyers and bar associations welcomed the development. Bombay High Court is the only HC now with five benches. Madhya Pradesh HC has three benches.Chief Justice of India Bhushan Gavai, before he became the CJI, while speaking at the inauguration of an advocates' academy last Sept, expressed support for the establishment of a separate Kolhapur bench of the HC. "A Kolhapur bench is the need of the hour. It will offer solace and effective, swift access to justice for far-flung residents of the state."Advocates Association of Western India (AAWI) president Prashant Relekar and secretary Suresh Sabrad said, "The cause of justice is served. This decision is required to be welcomed as a large number of litigants benefit."There are six districts of Western Maharashtra -- Sangli, Satara, Solapur, Kolhapur, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg -- that will fall under the new bench. Senior counsel Milind Sathe said the Kolhapur bench would also develop a new vibrant bar and prove effective for swifter access to justice for residents of these districts.Advocate Ganesh Sovani said it will ease the backlog at the Principal bench.The demand for a Kolhapur bench has been on since over three decades, with lawyers protests in 2012 even leading to construction of a new court complex.
