Patna: By addressing a joint rally of the Bihar NDA held at Purnia on Monday, both PM Narendra Modi and CM Nitish Kumar have made an effort to reset and strengthen the position of the BJP and the JD(U) in the Seemanchal region that comprises four districts -- Purnia, Katihar, Kishaganj and Araria -- ahead of the assembly elections.On Monday, both PM and CM went hammer and tongs after the Grand Alliance (GA) partners, especially the Congress and RJD, and also their leaders Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, respectively, without taking their names. At this stage, however, it remains difficult to predict how the Grand Alliance and the NDA will fare against each other in the future.As for Seemanchal region, BJP's Pradeep Kumar Singh represents the Araria parliamentary seat in the Lok Sabha, while the remaining three are held by the GA or INDIA bloc allies. Purnia by Rajesh Ranjan alias Pasppu Yadav as an independent MP aligned with the Congress, Katihar by Tariq Anwar, and Kishanganj by Jawed of the Congress.What, however, is more plaguing for both the BJP and the JD(U) is that their combined position in the 24 assembly constituencies of the Seemanchal region, spread over four districts, is anything but strong.The JD(U) and BJP together in the NDA had won 12 of the 24 assembly seats in the 2020 assembly elections, with the BJP bagging eight seats and the JD(U) four, while five assembly seats had gone to the Congress, one each to the RJD and CPI(ML), and five to the AIMIM led by Asaduddin Owaisi. However, a year later, four of the five AIMIM MLAs had switched to the RJD, increasing the latter's strength in the House from the Seemanchal region to five.The Seemachal region has long been considered as the bastion of the Congress and the non-BJP parties. However, the BJP and JD(U) together had surprised the poll pundits by winning 17 of the 24 seats in the 2010 assembly elections, with the BJP securing victories on 13 seats and the JD(U) on four, when the BJP and JD(U) alone constituted the NDA. That year, the victory of the two parties from the NDA in the region was a part of the bigger statewide pattern, as the JD(U) had won 115 and the BJP 91 seats -- or 206 of the total 243 seats.That peak performance of the NDA had plummeted to a poor show in the 2015 assembly elections, when the GA comprising RJD, JD(U) and Congress together had won 18 of the 24 seats. The BJP could win only six seats.Its alliance partners, like the then Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), led by late Ram Vilas Paswan, and Rashtriya Lok Samata Party (RLSP), did not fare well on the seats they contested. Even the performance of the outfit led by Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav in the assembly elections turned out to be poor.At present, with the GA partners raising concerns over the special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral roll, the political atmosphere in Bihar appears increasingly charged.The NDA, meanwhile, seems keen to avoid a highly polarised assembly election between itself and the GA. Political observers believe the NDA may be looking at how smaller parties like AIMIM could influence the GA's prospects, while also watching whether the Jan Suraaj affects the electoral calculations of the BJP or JD(U) in the Seemanchal region.
