Woman Dies In Toddy Tragedy, Toll Rises To 9

Hyderabad: A tragedy involving an adulterated toddy resulted in the death of a 40-year-old woman while undergoing treatment at Gandhi Hospital, raising the death toll to nine. According to KPHB police sub-inspector Manyam, "The deceased is Gangamani, 40. She was working as a housekeeping staff member and was hospitalised after she fell sick. She died on Sunday night at 9.04 pm while undergoing treatment. She consumed toddy on July 6 and fell sick the same day. Her family admitted her to the hospital, and she was later moved to Gandhi Hospital. Her body was sent for post-mortem analysis." The deceased's husband, Basawaiah, sat clueless at the mortuary on Monday. With a pale face, he recounted their loss, "This addiction is serious. We are from Kamareddy, and the same toddy in our village is not spurious. Toddy shops in the city mix it with chemicals, which I believe is making us more addicted. Now, it has cost me dearly." The grieving husband added, "I also consumed the toddy that day, but it was worse for my wife. I couldn't bear seeing her suffer. I moved her from hospital to hospital, but all my efforts went in vain." The couple are survived by a daughter, who is married to one Sanjeevaiah. He said, "It is difficult for my daughter to digest the fact that her mother is no more. Our only hope is ex gratia granted by the government."
