T'puram/Kochi: In light of the second Nipah case detected in Palakkad district, health minister Veena George has issued a cautionary directive to hospitals in six districts. The advisory has been given to hospitals in Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, Wayanad and Thrissur. The directive instructs that any cases of fever with Nipah symptoms or encephalitis should be reported. Meanwhile, containment zones have been declared in seven wards of Kumaramputhur panchayat, four wards of Mannarkkad municipality, three wards of Karimpuzha panchayat and three wards of Karakurissi panchayat.The minister said that the contact list of the 57-year-old man, who died of Nipah in a private hospital in Palakkad, has been prepared. His samples tested positive during a test conducted at Manjeri medical college.The contact tracing was immediately started, and 46 people were identified. Information, including CCTV footage, was collected. A route map was prepared based on the available information, and a family tree was also created. Field-level activities have been intensified in the area, and fever surveillance is continuing. Further steps will be taken as soon as confirmation is received from the National Institute of Virology, Pune.The minister has urged public to avoid unnecessary hospital visits, especially in Palakkad and Malappuram districts. It is advised to avoid visiting relatives and friends who are undergoing treatment in the hospital as much as possible. Only one person should accompany the patients as an assistant. Health workers, patients, and their companions visiting the hospital should wear masks.There are a total of 543 people in the Nipah contact list. There are 208 people in Malappuram district, 219 in Palakkad, 114 in Kozhikode, and two in Ernakulam. Ten people are under treatment in Malappuram, and two people are under ICU treatment. So far, 62 samples have tested negative in Malappuram district. One person in Palakkad is undergoing treatment in isolation. A total of 36 people in the state are in the highest risk category, and 128 people are under observation.
