Patna: A 45-year-old lawyer was shot dead near a tea stall at Mahendru under the Sultanganj police station area in Patna City around 3pm on Sunday. The victim, Jitendra Kumar Mehta, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH).The attack occurred while Mehta was returning home to the Mohammadpur locality after having tea at his usual roadside stall. According to police, unidentified assailants fired three to four rounds at him before fleeing the site.Patna SP (East) Parichay Kumar said: "A person named Jitendra was shot by criminals around 3pm. He was taken to the hospital for treatment, where he died. The family mentioned that he used to drink tea at the nearby stall in the area every day. Today, he came here for tea as well and while returning, he was shot." He added that an investigation is underway to identify the attackers and establish the motive behind the killing.Patna senior superintendent of police (SSP) Kartikeya K Sharma has ordered the formation of a special team to arrest those responsible. "Three bullet shells have been recovered from the crime site. The forensic science team has been called and CCTV footage from the area is being examined. It is not yet clear how many attackers were involved. Police are questioning eyewitnesses," he said.Sharma added that the victim was an advocate but had not practised law for the past two years. "He had some shops in the area which he rented out," he added.Commenting on the broader law and order situation in Patna, Sharma said, "The police are solving all the incidents that have occurred recently and bringing the criminals to justice. Moving forward, we will work to prevent such people from committing crimes in the first place and the police will operate in a more proactive manner."Patna City ASP I, Atulesh Jha, also visited the location and a team from Sultanganj police station began the investigation.According to the SHO of Sultanganj, the attackers fired two bullets into the victim's head and chest.
