Erode: A lone elephant strayed into a farm adjacent to the Thalavadi forest range in Erode district in the early hours of Saturday and destroyed over 300 fruit trees.The incident took place on a farm owned by K Rasukutty, 54, of Jorekadu hamlet near Thalavadi. "The elephant breached the wire fencing to enter the property and destroyed over 300 banana trees, three jackfruit trees, a parked tractor and some water pipes," Rasukutty said. Rasukutty notified forest officials who arrived at the scene and drove the elephant away. Meanwhile, villagers requested forest officials to drive all elephants that have been roaming in Jorekadu hamlet, deep inside the reserve forest. "We also want forest officials to conduct night patrols to monitor and manage elephant movements in the hamlet," another villager said. Promising appropriate action a forest official said, "Creating deep and wide trenches between the forest and the hamlets will serve as a permanent solution to this problem." He added that they would ensure the affected farmer receives compensation for the damages incurred.
