Madikeri: The Central Horticultural Experimental Station at Chettalli near Madikeri faces a continuous threat from wild elephants as they have damaged orchards. The centre maintains distinct blocks of orchards, including naseberry, guava, and butter fruit trees aged between 15 to 20 years. Wild elephants regularly invade these orchards during harvest seasons, destroying crops and damaging trees extensively. Wild elephants from the adjacent Meenakoli Reserve Forest have damaged the guava block.A makeshift elephant guard house, covered in plastic, has been erected centrally in the apple orchard and near the forest boundary where elephants typically enter. Despite elephant trenches and electric fencing, poor maintenance by the forest department has led to a continued elephant problem as they enter the horticultural centre and neighbouring gardens.Local residents have repeatedly requested the forest department's intervention, without success. They have sought railway barricades along the forest periphery to prevent elephants from accessing the horticultural centre and adjacent gardens. "This time, there will be a loss in the apple harvest due to the wild elephants," said Hanifa, arguing that the installation of railway barricades can control the wild elephants. The development of the centre's horticultural centre is not possible due to the wild elephant problem, said Muralidhar, head of the Chettalli experimental centre.
