Bhubaneswar: Govt has ordered a probe into the series of developments leading to the self-immolation by a girl student outside a govt college in Balasore. The committee will be led by the director of higher education.Higher education minister Suryabanshi Suraj on Saturday announced the formation of the probe committee, which includes a female joint secretary and a senior female educator. The committee will try to ascertain the circumstances leading to the self-immolation, the involvement of a teacher of the college and examine the role of the college administration, principal, and the internal complaints committee (ICC) in dealing with any prior complaints. The committee will also identify any lapses on the part of any individual or authority and any other incidental matters that emerge during the inquiry. "The committee is authorised to seek assistance from any person as deemed necessary for conducting the inquiry and submit the report to the higher education department," said an official order of the govt.Suraj said it is extremely unfortunate that the college student tried to kill herself. The govt has responded to the incident with great sensitivity and has taken swift and strict action, he added. He said the college principal and teacher have been suspended. The accused was arrested. Suraj said the govt is covering the medical expenses of the student undergoing treatment at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar. The govt will also bear the accommodation cost of the family members of the victim, who have been accommodated in a Dharmasala near AIIMS Bhubaneswar.BJD has blamed the inaction of the college authorities and police for the student's suicide attempt. BJD spokesperson Ipsita Sahu, at a press conference here on Saturday, said "The college did not take the girl's complaint seriously. Because of that, the student was forced to approach police.""Even though the student was a member of the Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the state govt could not provide her with security and justice. How can an ordinary student expect security and justice from this govt?" she added. She said the BJD will continue to fight until the student gets justice. "This incident clearly shows that students and women in the state have become completely unsafe. This shows that the state govt has completely failed to provide protection and justice to women," she added.
