Balasore, July 14 (UNI) The National Commission for Women (NCW) has directed the Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) to conduct a fair and time-bound investigation into the attempted self-immolation of a college girl in Balasore. The NCW has also sought an Action Taken Report (ATR) within three days. NCW chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar took cognisance of the incident, in which a 20-year-old student of Fakir Mohan (FM) Autonomous College allegedly set herself ablaze after facing sexual harassment and academic threats from the Head of the B.Ed department. The victim, identified as Soumyashree Bisi, a second-year integrated B.Ed student, suffered 90 per cent burns and is currently in critical condition at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar. She was initially admitted to Balasore Medical College before being shifted. The Commission has instructed authorities to provide free medical and psychological support to the victim. Meanwhile, rights activist Jayant Das has filed a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), demanding stringent action. The Odisha Crime Branch has taken suo motu cognisance of the incident and begun an inquiry. A two-member Crime Branch team, led by Additional SP Imami Kalyani Nayak, visited the college and held discussions with the principal and members of the internal complaints committee. The investigation is being closely monitored by Crime Branch IG Shyni S. Additionally, a three-member committee constituted by the state government has begun a separate probe. The team, comprising Higher Education Director Kali Prasanna Mohapatra, Joint Secretary Mousumi Nayak, and Prof. Jhumki Rath of BJB (Autonomous) College, visited the college and began their investigation. Soumyashree had reportedly staged a sit-in protest outside the college prior to the incident, demanding action against B.Ed department HoD Samir Sahu, whom she had accused of harassment. Despite filing a formal complaint and even approaching the local MP, no action was taken by the college authorities, leaving her deeply disturbed. On Saturday, she allegedly poured petrol on herself and set herself ablaze in front of the college gate. In response to the incident, the Odisha Higher Education Department suspended both Principal Dillip Kumar Ghosh and HoD Samir Sahu while Sahu has since been arrested by Sahadevkhunta police. The incident has triggered widespread outrage in the state with the Opposition parties, including the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj.
