Bhubaneswar: Leader of opposition and former chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Sunday appealed to governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, who is also chancellor of state universities, to intervene in the case of a 20-year-old college student who set herself ablaze over alleged sexual harassment by a faculty member in Balasore on Saturday.The incident prompted the opposition BJD and Congress to hold separate protests in Bhubaneswar, criticising the govt's handling of her grievance. They demanded the resignations of chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi and higher education minister Suryabanshi Suraj, forcing BJP's Ekamra-Bhubaneswar MLA Babu Singh to slam the opposition for using the tragic incident for political gains.In a post on X, Naveen wrote, "A young student resorting to self-immolation in one of Odisha's premier universities is both shocking and deeply distressing. She was allegedly subjected to relentless sexual harassment by a teacher who repeatedly demanded sexual favours. In a letter to the principal, she revealed that she had earlier attempted suicide but was saved."The BJD president emphasised the student's continuous state of fear and distress, noting that justice was denied despite her appeals. He said that although she had shared her concerns on social media and tagged senior officials, no action was taken."This tragic incident lays bare the stark reality of how she was denied justice, despite repeatedly voicing her grievances. Governor serves as the chancellor of key govt-run universities. I urge the Hon'ble governor to intervene and ensure that the student receives justice," Naveen wrote.
