New Delhi: Two labourers died while working on a carbon filter system at Sri Balaji Action Medical Institute in west Delhi's Paschim Vihar on Tuesday. The deceased, identified as Birjesh (26) and Vikram (30), both originally from Uttar Pradesh, were declared brought dead bythe attending doctor at the hospital.According to police officials, the maintenance work was carried out by a contractor under an annual maintenance contract (AMC). Preliminary investigation suggests the two labourers fell unconscious while working on the maintenance task, prompting hospital authorities to alert police.Acting promptly, the SHO of Paschim Vihar East police station, along with staff, reached the hospital and initiated a probe. A crime team and Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team were deployed to collect evidence from the spot, conduct a thorough inspection and document the scene, including scene photography.The bodies were later shifted to a hospital for post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death. Police registered a case under relevant sections of BNS and are working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. They are also examining the safety measures in place during maintenance work and the role of the contractor. The investigation is ongoing, police said, adding that the outcome will be crucial in determining the next course of action.Following the incident, the family members and friends of the duo protested and demanded accountability. Narender Kumar, a relative of Brijesh, said, "Five people were working there when they were told to go inside to level the chemical. Brijesh was the first to step onto the carbon filter system, but he fell unconscious. Vikram went in to save him, but he also got trapped." Another relative, also named Narender, said, "At the time of the incident, Vikram called his acquaintance Naresh, who was working on the upper floors of the building. He informed Naresh that Brijesh had gone inside and died. However, by the time Naresh came downstairs, Vikram also went in, and tragically, he too died."Co-workers and relatives claimed that Brijesh and Vikram had no experience working with carbon filter systems and were not provided with any safety gear. Initially, they refused to go inside but were ultimately compelled to do so, they alleged. Police said they are investigating the claims. Authorities will question the personnel concerned to determine who gave the order to send the two men inside and seek the necessary documents.In a statement, the hospital said, "Around 6.45pm on Monday, an unfortunate accident took place at Sri Balaji Action Medical Institute wherein workers of 'Friend's Enviro Engineers', who are responsible for the operation and maintenance of the sewage treatment plant (STP), were carrying out the servicing of the activated carbon filter. Workers of Friends Enviro Engineers, namely Brijesh and Vikram, met with an accident while carrying out their regular work of servicing the activated carbon filter.""The staff of Sri Balaji Action Medical Institute rescued them at the earliest and they were given the best possible treatment at the emergency of the hospital. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, they couldn't be saved. The hospital informed police at the earliest and is fully cooperating in their proceedings."
