Worker held up in lift for 15 hrs due to power outage | Mumbai News - Times of India

Thane: A painter was trapped for nearly 15 hours on the 21st floor of an under-construction building at Majiwada. The worker, Aloo Hussein (39), who hails from Kolkata, was stranded in an open lift used to ferry construction workers due to a power outage Tuesday afternoon. Nearly 11 hours after the incident, civic rescue teams freed him Wednesday morning. His condition is reported to be stable. He had resumed work after lunch, around 3 pm. He was ascending in the lift inside an open duct when it suddenly stopped due to a power cut. With no landing nearby, he called for help. His colleagues at Ashar Pulse skyscraper site tried to rescue him, but failed, said Yasin Tadvi, head of Thane regional disaster management cell. Colleagues passing him water through a small opening. MSEDCL was alerted, but they go no response due to a protest call. Site staff alerted the police and civic rescue teams around 2 am. "We also summoned Balkum fire officials and NDRF and initially planned to rappel down and rescue the worker, but as the lift was stuck at a spot with no proper landing nearby, we had to abort the plan, considering the risk due to the height and darkness. We checked if power could be restored and finally arranged for a diesel generator to power the lift, bringing it to the nearest landing before rescuing the worker," Tadvi said, questioning the delay by the site management to alert the rescuers in time. Meanwhile, experts urged the administration to ensure compliance with all safety norms to be followed at such construction sites. -- Manoj Badgeri
