Cuddalore: A school van crossing the railway tracks at Semmamkuppam in Cuddalore district was hit by a train on Tuesday morning killing three children and injuring another and the van driver. While Southern Railway claimed the van driver forced the level crossing guard to open the gate saying they would be late for school, witnesses and the injured schoolboy said the gate was open when the van passed through.The van was ripped off from the rear side in the impact and dragged by the train for almost 50 metres. The injured schoolboy Viswesh said, "We usually cross the railway gate around 7.30am every day. Mostly, the gate will be closed. The gate was open today (July 8), and we thought the train had already crossed." He said they did not hear the train's horn, and the driver, on seeing the gate open, drove on and the train hit from behind. "Within seconds, I was on the ground beside the railway line. I was not unconscious. I could see the gatekeeper in his cabin," Viswesh said. Southern Railway, however, issued a statement that the van driver had forced the gatekeeper to open the gate.Locals alleged the gatekeeper, identified as Pankaj Sharma, was in an inebriated condition and asleep in his cabin, and failed to close the gate. The villagers, who gathered in large numbers after the accident, thrashed the gatekeeper. He was rescued by a team of policemen and arrested.The children who died were T Charumathy, 16, her brother T Chezhiyan, 15, and Viswesh's brother V Niwas, 12, all students of a CBSE private school in Cuddalore town. There were only four students in the van that was on its way to pick up more children. Viswesh and the driver, C Sankar, 47, were undergoing treatment at the govt hospital in Cuddalore.
