Aizawl: Over 3,000 Myanmar nationals from Chin state have fled Khawmawi and Rihkhawdar villages located adjacent to Mizoram and are taking shelter in Zokhawthar village of Champhai district bordering Myanmar due to fighting between two Chin armed groups since Wednesday, police said on Sunday.A senior Champhai district police officer told TOI that 2,845 people fled Khawmawi and Rihkhawdar villages and have taken refuge in Zokhawthar village from Saturday morning till Sunday, following clashes between the armed Chinland Defence Force -- Hualngoram (CDF-Hualngoram) and the Chin National Defence Force (CNDF). "The figure may be more as many children might not have been counted due to flood of refugees entering Zokhawthar through the India-Myanmar bridge as well as by crossing the border river Tiau," the police officer said. While the CDF-Hualngoram and the CNDF commenced armed conflict at Satawm, Lianhna and Tuichirh villages from 12pm (Myanmar time) on Wednesday, the onslaught by the CNDF began around 8.30am on Saturday and the gunfire continued till 2.30pm Saturday. The gunfire finally stopped after CNDF militias overran and captured all the eight camps of the CDF-Hualngoram, including their main camp at Tuichirh village, a leader of the Hualngoram People's Organisation (HPO) -- the political wing of the CDF-Hualngoram -- as well as a civilian administrator in the area adjacent to Mizoram, said. "A large number of combatants from the CNDF accompanied by other groups under the Chin Brotherhood (CB) attacked our camps outnumbering our cadres and overran the camps. We did not surrender but had to flee the camps with some of them even entering Mizoram side," the leader who identified himself as Hminga told TOI over phone. He said five injured CDF-Hualngoram members were evacuated to Zokhawthar village.Zokhawthar YMA leaders said two wounded CNDF cadres were also brought to Zokhawthar village for treatment. Meanwhile, the body of C Lalhmuakmawia (37), a CDF-Hualngoram cadre, killed during the armed clashes on Saturday was released by the CNDF and brought to Chanmari west neighbourhood in Aizawl for burial after transportation was arranged by the Young Mizo Association (YMA) Zokhawthar unit. Lalhmuakmawia's funeral was held at a rented house at 3pm on Sunday. He is the second CDF-Hualngoram cadre who died in the violent clashes, with Lalliandinga being killed on Wednesday.Shooting began at the Sairang CNDF camp near Leilet village, opposite Saikhumphai village of southern Champhai district, where the Chin National Army (CNA) cadres attacked the camp around 12pm on Sunday. A villager of Saikhumphai told TOI over phone that sporadic gunfire continued till 4pm. The villager, however, said he did not have any knowledge about casualties on both sides.Adviser to Mizoram CM(political) Lalmuanpuia Punte, who visited Zokhawthar crossing the border and met leaders of both the CNDF and the CDF-Hualngoram at Khawmawi in Chin state of Myanmar, said more refugees entered Mizoram side due to the armed conflict at Leilet village on Sunday and the refugees refused to return to Chin state of Myanmar due to fresh clashes. Leaders of the advocacy for peace in Chinland, composed by CM Lalduhoma, also said though they held a meeting with leaders of the CNDF and CDF-Hualngoram to broker peace and initiate ceasefire, nothing could be done at this juncture as the fighting continues.
