Nagpur: Driven by a strong desire to have his own biological child, 35-year-old Akash Kanhekar mercilessly strangulated his nine-year-old stepson earlier this week so as to ensure his wife refrain from terminating her third pregnancy. The woman, who was a widow and had two children from the previous marriage, did not want another child. The incident has sent shockwaves across Akot city. The woman had reasoned with Kanhekar about having only her own children -- Darshan and her sister -- but the accused insisted on having his own biological child. Kanhekar was apprehensive about Darshan's future claim to family property and wanted him eliminated.Kanhekar planned and executed the murder the same day he and his wife learned she was pregnant for a third time. On both previous occasions, his wife kept Kanhekar in the dark about taking pills to terminate her pregnancy.The confession came after five days of intense police interrogation following the arrest of Kanhekar and his accomplice, Gaurav Gaigole, on July 2. The case was probed and detected by the Akot police team under assistant SP Anmol Mittal and Akola SP Archit Chandak. Kanhekar perceived Darshan as a threat to his control over his wife's affection and assets. Kanhekar roped in Gaigole for a mere Rs300 and executed his plan. Kanhekar strangled the boy and disposed of the body in a sack in a forested area near Shahnur Wildlife Sanctuary, part of the Melghat Tiger Reserve.The case began when Kanhekar and his wife reported Darshan missing at Akot city police station at 8.30pm on July 2 claiming he left home at 3pm and never returned. Darshan's phone, switched off at 3.21pm, raised immediate red flag. A breakthrough came via Akot's integrated CCTV Command Centre, where footage showed Darshan being picked up by two men on a motorcycle at 3.05pm. Under intense questioning by senior inspector Amol Malwe, Kanhekar confessed to committing the crime.Kanhekar misled police about the body's location, delaying its recovery. After a gruelling 10-hour overnight search using mobile lights and torches, Darshan's remains were found in a riverine gully in rugged terrain. Simultaneously, Gaigole was apprehended in Anjangaon Surji tehsil and brought to Akot for questioning.The police, supported by a mobile forensic van, completed 90% of the investigation within 12 hours, adhering to Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) protocols, including video documentation. The accused were remanded in custody until July 7.
