Rourkela: A 10-member team, including a veterinary doctor, from the Rourkela forest division has gone to the Saranda forest in Jharkhand to provide assistance in the rescue, tranquillisation and treatment of an injured six-year-old elephant. The incident reportedly took place between June 24 and 26, and the injured elephant was seen on June 27 near the Digha area in Saranda. Thereafter, the elephant went inside the dense forest. Forest officials started a search for the elephant and took the help of locals. On July 3, the elephant was found with a wound on its left hind leg, which was badly swollen. The elephant was seen splashing water on its wound, indicating it was in severe pain. Saranda DFO Abhiroop Sinha requested his Rourkela counterpart Jasabanta Sethi to provide assistance. Accordingly, a 10-member team visited the Saranda forest.Sethi said, "I asked the Saranda DFO about whether the injury was due to an IED explosion. But he said he ineracted with BSF officers and they ruled out that reason. He said the injury might be due to some other reason."

Bhopal: Vatsala, considered Asia's oldest elephant, died at the age of more than 100 years in Panna Tiger Reserve (PTR) in Madhya Pradesh late on Tuesday. Rourkela: A six-year-old elephant calf that was found severely injured in the Saranda forest near the Odisha-Jharkhand border last week has died despite sustained rescue and treatment efforts. UDHAGAMANDALAM: A highly decomposed carcass of a male elephant was found on a piece of patta land in the Singara forest range in the Nilgiris district on Wednesday. Both the tusks of the elephant were missing, forest department officials said.
