Coimbatore: Wild tusker 'Rolex' has claimed one more life with a 55-year-old man it attacked on Thursday succumbing to his injuries on Friday, even as the forest department is yet to make any progress in its operation to capture and relocate the tusker that was launched on Sept 16.The victim has been identified as Maruthachalam, a farmhand from Chinnamalai near Maruthamalai. He was trampled by the tusker around 7pm on Thursday, when he was on his way to his farmland. While foresters had rushed him to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital immediately after he was attacked by the tusker, Maruthachalam succumbed to injuries at the hospital on Friday morning. He is the fourth person to be killed by 'Rolex'. The Vadavalli police have registered a case and are investigating. The operation to capture and relocate 'Rolex' was launched after it killed three people in two months. During the operation, the wild tusker had attacked a forest veterinarian, who was monitoring its movements. While three forest teams have been monitoring the tusker's movements since Sept 16, the elephant gave them the slip and surfaced near a human habitat at Chinnamalai on Thursday, when it attacked Maruthachalam, said an official source. "Three teams continue to monitor the tusker. The elephant could be darted with sedatives and captured only when it comes to the plains," said a forest officer. Farmers who attended the grievance redressal meeting at the district collectorate on the day, demanded that Rolex be captured and relocated at the earliest. Meanwhile, former AIADMK minister S P Velumani inspected a forest camp at Dhaliyur, where three kumkis involved in the operation are stationed.
