Ahmedabad: From sabzis to sambhar, the cost of cooking a regular Indian meal for an average family is rising sharply as vegetable prices hit new highs, with everyday greens now as pricey or pricier than exotics. Going by the current prices, a humble bhindi or guvar sabzi may cost more than a takeaway meal. Retail prices of vegetables like okra, ivy gourd (tindora), bottle gourd, and tomatoes surged well beyond the Rs 100/kg mark in Ahmedabad markets, turning daily nutrition into a household budgetary challenge.The steepest spike is seen in ivy gourd (tindora), now priced at Rs 216 a kilogram, followed by cluster beans (Rs 188/kg), drumsticks (Rs 168/kg), and okra (Rs 160/kg). Tomatoes prices, which briefly saw relief in summer, are back up to Rs 104/kg, while capsicum costs Rs 154 a kilogram. Even the bottle gourd, traditionally an affordable vegetable, is now being sold at Rs 120/kg.The price surge is primarily driven by heavy rain, which has disrupted supply chains and reduced the volume of vegetables arriving at the Ahmedabad Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) by nearly 25%. "This shortfall led to a 25% increase in wholesale rates compared to June," said a senior APMC office-bearer.Adding to the strain, some retailers are capitalising on the lower supply to hike margins disproportionately. "Best quality tomatoes, for instance, were available at Rs 35 a kilogram in the wholesale market. But app-based platforms were listing them at Rs 66-75/kg, and retail outlets were selling them for as high as Rs 100," said one dealer. "Retailers are charging more than double the wholesale rate."Transportation issues have further aggravated the situation. "Nearly 30% of stock gets spoiled due to poor road conditions and traffic jams during monsoon, which contributes to the overall spike in prices," another trader added.Experts add that while prices of garlic (Rs 240) and herbs like coriander (Rs 300) have soared, the bigger burden on household budgets comes from vegetables that are a key part of a meal becoming costlier. "You can skip garnish, but you can't skip the base vegetables. For how long can one rely on potatoes and tomatoes and not consume green vegetables?" said Mrinali Barua, a Makarba resident.With prices unlikely to cool until local monsoon harvests begin arriving in scale, many families are adopting coping strategies -- shopping in wholesale yards, cutting down the frequency of purchases, or substituting expensive vegetables with lentils and grains.
