Ludhiana: Although industrial associations in the city are largely happy with Sanjeev Arora's induction into the cabinet, some feel that restoring industrial development would be a tough task for him. Talking to TOI, Harsimerjit Singh, president, United Cycles Parts and Manufacturers Association (UCPMA), which has more than 3,000 members, said that Arora, an industrialist from Ludhiana, was familiar with the problems faced by the industry. He added that Arora interacted with industrialists during the elections and they were confident that he would help solve their problems, especially those related to power issues and infrastructure in focal points. He also expressed the hope that Arora would resolve issues related to the 0.5% surcharge on bank credits. Upkar Singh Ahuja, president, Chamber of Industrial and Commercial Undertakings (CICU), which has 36 affiliated associations, said that rarely has an industrialist from Ludhiana city become an industry minister. Harish Kairpal, finance secretary, Knitwear Club, which has 1,400 members, said that they did not need to explain their problems to Arora, who already knew about the ground realities. An industrialist, asking not to be named, said that Arora was made industries minister at a time when the Punjab industry was facing challenges. He added that the state industry, which was once in the top league, had now fallen to the 20th spot in the country, leaving Arora with his task cut out for him. MSID:: 122231608 413 |
