Twice the boards, double the trouble? Chandigarh schools react to CBSE's new plan | Chandigarh News - Times of India

Chandigarh: The Central Board of Secondary Education's decision to conduct Class 10 board exams twice a year from 2026 has drawn mixed reactions from school heads in Chandigarh. While many educators see the move as a progressive step towards reducing exam-related stress and giving students more flexibility, concerns are being raised about how schools will cope with the added logistical and academic pressures.Under the new system, all students will appear for the main board exam in Feb-March, covering the full syllabus. A second, optional session will be held around May, where students will have the opportunity to improve their marks in up to three subjects. The best score in each subject will be retained for the final result.School administrators agree the intent is well-meaning, especially for students who may fall ill, face personal setbacks, or struggle with performance anxiety. But the manner in which the plan will be implemented, since by May, schools start with next academic session, has left many with questions."This is not right," said HS Mamik, chairman of Vivek High School. "Students may start taking the first attempt lightly, thinking they can do better next time. It may breed laziness and over-reliance on a second chance," he said. "Instead of learning consistency, they might start planning for 'repeat performances'."Reema Dewan, director of Delhi Public School, Chandigarh, welcomed the move, calling it a step in the right direction. "It is encouraging that students will have another opportunity to do better within the same academic year. It is in line with the shift towards a more flexible and inclusive assessment system. Of course, it will require careful coordination from CBSE in terms of scheduling, logistics and evaluation, but I am hopeful the implementation will be thoughtfully managed."The logistical strain was a major concern for Gurpreet Bakshi, chief administrator of St Kabir Public School. "Schools will once again be turned into exam centres -- that means reassigning teachers as invigilators, handling paperwork, and disrupting regular classes after the new session begins. Who will take responsibility for that disruption?" he asked.Bakshi also questioned the reducing relevance of board exams in today's academic landscape. "Most good universities and colleges have their own entrance tests or criteria. So how much does improving a board score actually help a student in the long run?"For some educators, the policy stands out for offering fairness to students who miss or underperform in their first attempt due to unforeseen circumstances. "Not every student is at their best on one fixed day," said Gurnam Kaur Grewal, principal of Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36. "Health issues, family emergencies -- these things happen. This gives them another chance. But teachers will be juggling a lot -- new classes, ongoing corrections, admissions, and now another exam phase."She added that the board needs to think holistically. "Every year, exams are being pulled earlier to fit the university admission cycle. If we're rethinking the structure, let's not just patch over the surface. We need systemic reform from the top down."Despite the apprehensions, most schools agree that if handled well, the two-exam format could reduce pressure and offer greater flexibility to students. But for it to succeed, clarity, support, and proper timing will be crucial.
