Bhubaneswar/Sambalpur: A court in Sambalpur on Thursday sent a university teacher to judicial custody for allegedly entering into a physical relationship with a female student under the false pretext of marriage. The incident comes days after a 20-year-old Balasore student set herself ablaze over alleged inaction by college authorities on her sexual harassment complaint against a faculty member. On Wednesday, police received a complaint from the 20-year-old girl, a second-year student of integrated BA BEd course, in which she claimed that the 32-year-old assistant professor was sexually and mentally exploiting her for the last one-and-half years under the pretext of marriage. The university placed the assistant professor under suspension following his arrest.IG (Northern Range) Himanshu Lal said police took swift action as soon as the complaint was lodged.Local police said the accused faculty member maintained physical relationship with the 20-year-old in his govt quarter. In her FIR lodged at the woman police station, the girl alleged that the assistant professor approached her with offer to help her in her studies. Over time, he emotionally manipulated her and gained her trust, and then entered into a physical relationship, the girl claimed."No rape charge has been made as the student is a major, and it happened with her consent," additional superintendent of police Ajay Mishra said.The girl claimed the assistant professor had been maintaining physical relationship with other girls as well. Subsequently, she claimed to have experienced emotional breakdown, anxiety and depression. The girl further alleged that the teacher misused his position to gain her trust and sexually exploit her.The university vice-chancellor said the student had not reported anything to the internal complaints committee (ICC). "She directly went to the police. We came to know about it after police conveyed the news of the teacher's arrest on Wednesday night. We have zero tolerance for sexual harassment, and we would have acted if she had registered a complaint with us," the vice-chancellor said, adding that the accused faculty member had joined service in 2020.
