6 months after prowling across J'khand and Bengal, rescued PTR tiger returns home | Ranchi News - Times of India

Ranchi/Daltonganj: A male tiger, which had sneaked into a family's bedroom in Ranchi's Silli area on Wednesday morning, was soft released back into its original habitat, the Palamu Tiger Reserve (PTR), on Thursday around 7 am after a 13-hour rescue operation. The deputy director of the PTR (north), P K Jena, said, "The five-year-old Quila was first sighted and camera trapped at Palamu fort in October 2023. Since then, it has been camera trapped several times in and around the area. That's why we named it Quila. It had ventured into Chatra, Hazaribag, and Gumla between October 2023 and December 2024, but always returned. It reached the Dalma elephant sanctuary, around 200 km from PTR, in December 2024. It may have faced hurdles in the animal corridor in its way back home and kept moving among the Dalma-West Bengal-Khunti forest corridors since then. It lost its way and strayed into the Silli house."The news of first case of a tiger straying into human habitation in the state broke at dawn on Wednesday. "Everyone, right from the field staff to the top bosses of the state administration and the forest department, rose to the occasion to ensure that there were no collateral damages," he stated. Deputy director of the PTR (south), Kumar Ashish, said, "The tiger was offered water before embarking on around eight-hour journey to the PTR after it underwent a medical check-up in Ranchi. The area where the tiger was released has sufficient prey base and is less frequented by humans. It sprinted when the gate of the cage in the rescue van was opened. Then it began to walk."Foresters have dubbed Quila as 'intelligent' and 'sharp'. "It's so sharp that it often avoided any place, even remotely, where human beings existed. Though there have been several cases of cattle kill," said Jena.On the challenges faced during the rescue operation, the deputy director of the PTR (north) said, "We were dealing with a tiger for the first time. A small mistake might have scared the tiger or led to a stampede-like situation as a crowd of 5,000 to 7,000 villagers had gathered. The room was dark. We kept assessing its move with a mobile torch through a hole. We practiced the opening and closing of the gate of the cage-fitted van outside the room several times. The room's door was opened and the tiger walked inside the cage."
