Mysuru: After the death of five tigers, including four cubs, at MM Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, forest officials are closely monitoring conflict zones near forest borders. Field officers have been instructed to intensify patrolling in the border areas.Foresters, however, admit there is a shortage of staff for patrolling in tiger reserves across Karnataka. PCCF (wildlife) and chief wildlife warden of Karnataka, Prabhash Chandra Ray, said he will review the situation to check any slackness in patrolling practices.The death of five tigers in a single day has added to the tiger mortality in Karnataka, which has the second-highest number of big cats in India, as 10 big cats died in the first six months of the year 2025. Of these, seven deaths, including the five at MM Hills, occurred outside the tiger reserve area.The main concern is the apparent lack of sufficient patrolling, attributed to a shortage of frontline staff and pending salaries, in both reserve and wildlife areas. This may lead to reduced vigilance, as pointed out in the MM Hills case. Despite the tigers dying just 100 metres away from the road, field and patrolling staff failed to notice and report the deaths.Poisoning not new in KarnatakaThe tiger family was poisoned to death allegedly by cattle owners as the mother cat preyed on their cow. Poisoning of tigers by villagers is not new in Karnataka, as several such incidents have been reported, including in Nagarhole Tiger Reserve over the last one-and-a-half decades. The MM Hills forest incident has brought the issue to the fore again, compelling foresters to review the situation and the grazing of livestock near forest borders.Chief wildlife warden to review staffing levelsPCCF, who assumed office on Tuesday, told TOI that he would first evaluate the regularity and thoroughness of patrolling activities in all five tiger reserves, wildlife areas, and sanctuaries. He will assess the adequacy of field inspections and monitoring efforts and identify any potential slackness in patrolling practices. Secondly, he will review the staffing levels, particularly in frontline camps, and examine the status of pending salaries, if any, and their potential impact on staff morale and performance.Conservator of forests (Mysuru Circle) M Malathi Priya, who is in charge of the administration of Bandipur Tiger Reserve, said that after the tragedy at MM Hills Sanctuary, all deputy conservators of forests in tiger reserves, territorial forests, and wildlife areas in the circle have been instructed to conduct proper patrolling and report to the office about any challenges once a fortnight.In response to a query, the CF said there are no pending salary dues to the staff in the circle but admitted that there is a shortage of field staff in Bandipur as well as in Nagarahole Tiger Reserves.
