Dibrugarh: The forest department on Thursday morning finally managed to capture a female leopard at the Philobari tea estate, which had been terrorising residents for over 45 days. The big cat, aged around 7-8 years, was trapped in an iron cage, which had been set up in sector 21 of the tea estate.While locals gathered to catch a glimpse of the caged leopard, the animal was soon transported to the Doomdooma forest office for a medical examination, where officials confirmed that after a thorough health check-up the leopard will be released into the forest.Doomdooma forest ranger Bidyadhar Sonowal said it was the third instance in two years, when a leopard had been captured at the tea estate. He further said at least five more leopards were still roaming around the area, posing a continued threat to the locals."We have been tracking this particular leopard for the last 45 days, after receiving numerous complaints from tea estate workers and local residents. There are at least five more leopards roaming around this area. In the past two years, six people have been injured in leopard attacks. Additionally, nearly 40 goats, along with several cows and dogs, have been killed by leopards," Sonowal said."The Quick Response Team (QRT) will monitor the movement of the leopards, set up traps and respond swiftly to emergencies. They are trained to handle such situations. We are also conducting awareness programmes to educate locals on safety measures. Our priority is to protect both, the wildlife and the local communities," Sonowal added.He added that a recent leopard census, conducted in the tea gardens of Tinsukia in 2024, had estimated the presence of around 100 leopards in the region. The forest department has urged locals to remain vigilant and report any leopard sightings immediately.
