New Delhi: Days after a 36-year-old techie from Kerala went missing during a trek in Karnataka's Kodagu and was found safe days later, local BJP leaders have filed a police complaint alleging that she might have faked her disappearance for publicity. Calling for a thorough probe into her survival story, the rural unit of the BJP suspects the incident was a staged act. GS Sharanya, a 36-year-old IT professional from Kerala's Kozhikode, went missing on April 2 during a trekking trip to Tadiandamol hills in Kodagu. The techie, who was part of a 10-member group, allegedly lost her way and got separated after setting out for a trek on Thursday. She later ended up in a dense forest, where she spent four days with just water before being rescued on Sunday. Doubts over survival story The rural unit of the BJP has filed a complaint with the Napoklu police seeking a probe into the incident. General secretary of the district BJP Rural Mandal P Danoj, and several BJP workers visited the police station on Tuesday and lodged a complaint against the techie. Raising concerns over the case involving the missing trekker, Danoj said that a person couldn't stay alive in a dense forest for four days without food. "Naxal activities are going on in all parts, and this case has given rise to further suspicion," he alleged, TOI reported. In the complaint, the party said that discussions on social media have led to suspicions regarding the incident and urged the police to conduct a thorough probe into the matter without any political pressure. The BJP leaders said that the techie could have faked her disappearance for publicity and alleged that it caused unnecessary government expenditure. Notably, a massive search operation was launched to trace the techie. Additional personnel and drone cameras were also deployed to locate her. A social media user said the Kerala techie needs to be investigated and booked for "wasting people's time and resources". "Levy a hefty fine on her and if there is a provision, imprison her for wasting taxpayers' money," another user said on X. The police have not registered an FIR but have decided to initiate an investigation. "We believed whatever she said when we first saw and spoke to her after she was rescued. Now, some are raising doubts about her survival story. We will probe that angle too. We will thoroughly examine the sequence of events and her claims," a police official, who was part of the rescue team, said. How Kerala techie survived 4 days in dense forest Sharanya, who had travelled alone from Kerala for the trek, said that she never felt scared after being lost in the dense forest and kept moving in the hope of finding help. With just a 500 ml bottle of water and no mobile connectivity, she said she tried contacting a colleague, but her phone's battery drained. "I had lost my way and when I climbed down, I could not see anyone. I walked till around 6.45 pm on the first day after losing the path. After that, I stayed in an open space near a stream as I could not proceed further because of the dense forest," she said, recalling how she survived alone in the dense forest with limited resources. She was eventually spotted by a group of locals in a remote patch of the forest "where nobody usually goes", according to members of the rescue team. The Karnataka government had launched a massive round-the-clock search operation involving nine teams -- including forest officials, Anti-Naxal Squad members, and local tribal communities -- to find her after she went missing. Additional personnel and advanced equipment, including thermal drone cameras, were deployed to locate her.
