Rayagada: At least 30 policemen were injured and several villagers were injured in after clash over road construction in Odisha's Rayagada district on Tuesday. The project was linked to proposed mining activity in the Sijimali region of the state. The authorities have imposed a curfew in the area following tensions. The unlawful gathering has also been restricted. As per a report published in India Today, the road was being constructed by a private firm to connect Sagbari area. Notably, some of the locals had been imposing the project due to concerns related to the environment and their livelihood. However, the situation soon deteriorated, with villagers allegedly starting to pelting stones at the policemen. Among those injured were the Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Rayagada and the Inspector-in-Charge of Kashipur police station. Among the 30 policemen injured in the incident, seven are said to be in critical condition. They have been admitted to the district hospital in Rayagada. Others have been admitted in Kashipur Community Health Centre. Several villagers too sustained injuries. Additional police forces deployed After the violence, authorities have deployed additional police forces in the area to restore law and order in the areas. Several senior officials are present in the house and are closely monitoring the situation. Sharing details, officials said that road construction was approved by the government; even then, opposition continued from local residents, with many fearing ecological damage. The authorities have imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNS) in the village. As per officials, the situation is being brought under control gradually, with efforts to prevent any further clashes.
