Varanasi: At least five persons, including two women and a girl, were killed while several other passengers suffered injuries when a UP State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) bus rammed into a truck after veering into the wrong lane near Gureini petrol pump under the Khetasarai police station area of Jaunpur district late Tuesday night.Jaunpur district magistrate (DM) Dinesh Chandra and SP Kaustubh said seven severely injured passengers were taken to the district hospital, where four were declared dead by doctors. In view of critical condition of one woman, doctors referred her to the trauma centre of BHU in Varanasi, but she died in the course of treatment. They added that 12 other passengers with minor injuries were treated at a local hospital in Khetasarai. Police started investigating the matter after ensuring removal of both vehicles from the highway.During the initial investigation, police discovered that at 10:45 pm, a UPSRTC bus from the Varanasi depot, going to Shahganj in Jaunpur with over 25 passengers on board, was passing through Khetasarai. When it reached near Gureini petrol pump, the bus driver entered the wrong lane, resulting in a head-on collision with a truck coming from the opposite direction.Locals and passersby swung into action to rescue the injured passengers, while Khetasarai police arrived and rushed them to a local hospital. In view of the critical condition of seven, doctors referred them to the district hospital.Assistant Superintendent of Police (City) Ayush Sriuvastava said that the deceased were identified as Poonam Vishwakarma (26) of Shahganj, her daughter Priyal (2), Devi Prasad (35) of Khutahan, Ratanlal (52) of Khetasarai and Gehna Devi (56) of Azamgarh district.Based on complaint of Poonam's father-in-law, Pyarelal Vishwakarma, a case was registered at Khetasarai police station under sections 281/125(A)/125(B)/106 Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the unidentified driver of UPSRTC's bus.
