New Delhi: A marine engineering student was crushed under the backboard of a basketball court in Pune. He sustained severe head injuries in the accident. The teachers and other students of the college rushed him to hospital, but he could not survive. The incident has sent shockwaves across the campus. Student dies while doing pull ups on basketball court: Eyewitnesses According to a report in NDTV, the deceased was identified as Vishal Verma, who hailed from Uttar Pradesh's Basti. He was a second-year student at Tolani Maritime Institute in Pune. On Sunday morning he had stepped out of his hostel for a morning walk and some exercise on the college campus. He was doing pull ups on the basketball hoop, when suddenly the entire frame collapsed on him. As the entire basketball frame fell on his head, he collapsed and started bleeding heavily. Fellow students and teachers present on the campus rushed him to the hospital. However, he could not survive the accident. The doctors declared him dead, soon after admission to the facility. Verma's LinkedIn account showed that he was from Basti and had joined the private marine institute in Pune in 2024. He was enrolled in a B.Tech Marine Engineering course and was set to complete his degree in 2028. The principal of the college, Dr Sanjeet Kanungo described the death as "very tragic". Recalling the incident he said that Vishal was trying to do pull ups on the basketball frame, when the entire structure collapsed and fell on his forehead. He said that an investigation would be launched to find out what exactly caused the collapse of the structure. The police have said that they are probing if the frame was rusty or damaged, before the accident. A case has been registered in the student's death and a probe is underway, said a police official. Rohtak accident 6 months back The death of Vishal at the engineering college comes just 6 months after a 16-year-old boy died in a similar manner in Haryana. Hardik Rathi from Rohtak in Haryana was practicing in the basketball court, when the pole fell and crushed him to death. He was a national level basketball player. In this case, Hardik was reportedly clutching on to the rim of the basket when the structure gave way. These incidents call into question the maintenance of sports infrastructure in the country.
