New Delhi: Indian refiners have secured Iranian crude and aren't facing any payment hurdles, the oil ministry said Saturday, adding that an LPG cargo is currently discharging at Mangalore port. This marks India's first public acknowledgement of the resumption of energy trade with Iran. "News reports and social media posts of an Iranian crude cargo being diverted from Vadinar, India, to China due to "payment issues" are factually incorrect," the oil ministry said in a post on X. Indian refiners are rushing to secure crude oil, LNG and LPG supplies from sources worldwide to feed its growing economy. Efforts are in response to the West Asia conflict and an effective Iranian blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 40% of India's crude and 90% of LPG imports pass. Iran used to supply 10% of India's crude imports before 2019, when sanctions forced refiners to halt purchases. Iranian shipments suit India as they are less exposed to transit disruptions and can reach much faster than scarce, long-haul alternatives from outside the Gulf. Cargoes from other Gulf suppliers have been stranded amid the threat of Iranian missile strikes.
