Srinagar- A growing porcupine menace is damaging saffron fields in Pampore, raising concern among farmers in Kashmir's famed saffron belt, even as the government acknowledged the scale of the problem and outlined steps to address it. The issue came up in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly after National Conference MLA Hasnain Masoodi moved a calling attention notice, flagging damage to the high-value crop in the south Kashmir town. Responding in the House, Forest Minister Javed Ahmad Rana said field evidence has confirmed the active presence of porcupines in and around saffron-growing areas. He said the region's terrain, including caves, crevices, hilly patches and overgrown private lands, provides favourable shelter for the animals, allowing them to thrive close to cultivated fields. Farmers in Pampore have been reporting increasing crop losses, with porcupines burrowing into fields and feeding on saffron corms, directly affecting yield and livelihood in the area known for producing some of the world's finest saffron. The government said a range of interventions is being planned to contain the damage. These include clearing of bushes and undergrowth, installation of deep-set mesh barriers around vulnerable fields, and use of repellents and deterrent systems such as lights and sound devices.
