New Delhi: The death toll in Motihari, Bihar, has risen to four on Friday, while six others are still battling for life. As per the officials, seven people have been discharged after initial treatment. The tragedy began in Balganga village under the Raghunathpur police station. The most horrifying part is that six to seven people who consumed the alcohol almost lost their eyesight. East Champaran District Magistrate Saurabh Jorwal said, The death toll has now mounted to four. Bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination. The exact cause of death can only be known after the report." The administration has taken strict action against 12, which includes a village chowkidar, while the SHO of Turkauliya police station has also been suspended with immediate effect. The incident began on Wednesday evening when people in Balganga and surrounding areas consumed the liquor. The case got suspicious after the death of Pramod Yadav on Thursday but by Friday morning, the situation started becoming dire. "Everything went blurry in half an hour" Dr. Anoop Gautam of Sadar Hospital confirmed that the effect of the poisonous liquor was so deadly and most of the patients who arrived at the hospital showed symptoms of vision loss. The deceased have been identified as Chandu (32), Pramod Yadav (32), Parikshan Manjhi (55) and Hiralal Mahto. It is feared that approximately 30 to 40 people consumed the toxic consignment, which could see a surge in the death toll. Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha on tragedy says, "The government has taken cognisance of the matter. The administration is working, and the incident will be investigated." Investigation ongoing As per the initial investigation, the first victim had consumed illicit liquor in the Raghunathpur area. On the instructions of the Superintendent of Police, continuous raids are being conducted by the Cyber DSP and the DIU to find out where the consignment of poisonous liquor originated. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed under the leadership of the Sadar SDPO to thoroughly investigate the matter. Many people are secretly seeking treatment in private hospitals, fearing public shame. The administration is urging people to come forward and seek treatment so that lives can be saved.
