New Delhi: The Indian Navy received a major boost on Friday as it commissioned its third nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, INS Aridhaman (S4). Defence Minister Rajnath Singh presided over the ceremony, marking a historic milestone for India's maritime prowess. The ceremony was kept confidential, with Rajnath Singh hinting at the development on X (formerly Twitter), writing, "Aridhaman is not just a word, but a force!" Defence sources have confirmed that India's third SSBN is operational. SSBN refers to a nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine built indigenously and is capable of carrying and launching weapons over long distances. Earlier, Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi had stated in December 2025 that INS Aridhaman was in the final trial phase and would be commissioned soon. Strategic significance With the induction of INS Aridhaman, India's nuclear triad has been further strengthened. The country now has three operational SSBNs, which will help ensure Continuous At-Sea Deterrence. Aridhaman has double the missile carriage capacity of its predecessor and possesses advanced stealth features. It ensures a formidable second-strike capability and strengthens our resolve for a "Secure and Sovereign Indo-Pacific." It has enhanced firepower equipped to carry K-4 and K-15 strategic missiles. The submarine enhances India's "second-strike capability", meaning it can respond to any nuclear attack from the sea. All about Aridhaman's capabilities Following in the footsteps of its predecessors, INS Arihant (commissioned in 2016) and INS Arighaat (commissioned in August 2024), Aridhaman is slightly larger and feature a more streamlined hull for improved stealth and acoustic performance. The submarine is powered with an 83 MW pressurised water reactor (PWR) developed by Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC). It is equipped with eight vertical launch tubes, which is double the capacity of INS Arihant. This enables it to carry either eight K-4 long-range missiles with a capacity of 3,500 km range or up to 24 K-15 missiles with a range of 750 km. Enhanced maritime strength The commissioning of INS Aridhaman is seen as a major boost to India's indigenous defence capabilities and strategic strength. It marks a vital step in India's naval fleet, enhancing both strike potential and survivability in line with the country's nuclear doctrine. SSBNs (Ship, Submersible, Ballistic, Nuclear vessels) provide India with an assured second-strike capability. A fourth, still unnamed, is planned to be added soon. With a fleet of four, the Indian Navy would achieve true second strike capability. This will help to reinforce India's presence in the Indian Ocean region and help maintain regional balance.
