The number of India's wireless (mobile + Fixed Wireless Access (FWA)) subscribers increased to 127.33 crore at the end of February 2026, thereby registering a monthly growth rate of 0.55 per cent as compared with 126.63 crore at the end of January. Operators wise, Bharti Airtel (Airtel) added the maximum number of subscribers at around 48.6 lakh, followed by Reliance Jio (Jio) at 16.24 lakh, and Vodafone-Idea's (VIL) subscribers addition remained at 21,927. However, State-owned telecom operator BSNL lost around 1.02 lakh subcribers during the month, the latest data shared by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said. Expansion Plans According to market reports, VIL is expected to gain more subscribers in the coming months with its plans to launch 5G services in more cities across the country. The company on Monday announced its plans to roll out 5G in 90 more cities by May and with this, VIL's 5G footprint will grow from 43 cities across 17 priority circles to 133 cities nationwide, strengthening its presence in India's major data markets. As part of this phase, the company plans to expand its 5G coverage in 15 circles including Mumbai, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh & Chattisgarh, Haryana, Punjab, UP-East, UP-West, Kolkata and West Bengal, prioritising key markets, including industrial corridors, high data consumption centres and emerging urban clusters. Some of the key cities are Chennai, Hyderabad, Puducherry, Gandhinagar, Goa, Kolhapur, Sikar, Varanasi, Prayagraj, and Durgapur, . Rural Growth Meanwhile, TRAI's report said that the total wireless subscription in urban areas increased to 73.07 crore at the end of February, from 72.56 crore in January. The subscription in rural areas also increased to 54.25 crore against 54.06 crore during the same period. The monthly growth rate of urban and rural wireless subscriptions was 0.70 per cent and 0.35 per cent, respectively.
