Mumbai: The Deonar police have registered a case against a gas delivery worker for illegally storing commercial LPG cylinders in a public area, officials said on Wednesday. The accused, identified as Shahid Ali Imam Hussain Sayyed, was found in possession of 23 empty commercial gas cylinders and a tempo, all of which have been seized. The action was initiated following a complaint by Jagannath Bhanudas Sanap, 57, a rationing officer from the Govandi Rationing Office. Based on his complaint, police have invoked sections 3, 7, and 8 of the Essential Commodities Act, along with provisions under the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Regulation of Supply and Distribution) Order, 2000. Rationing Inspector Spotted Suspicious Tempo Near Public Toilet During Patrol According to the FIR, a rationing inspector noticed a suspiciously parked tempo near a public toilet in Gautam Nagar, close to the Deonar slaughterhouse, during a routine patrol on March 31. Suspecting illegal activity, officials sought assistance from Deonar police. Upon inspection, the accused was called to the spot and asked to open the vehicle. Police recovered 23 empty commercial LPG cylinders of different capacities, including Bharat Gas (19 kg and 5 kg) and Hindustan Gas (19 kg). Accused Produced Outdated Invoices from 2016-2018 During questioning, Sayyed claimed he had sourced the cylinders from Mannat Gas Agency in Kurla and Aasu Gas Agency in Malad. He also produced invoices from 12 establishments such as hotels, tea stalls, fast food centers, cafes, and dairy units. However, the invoices were found to be outdated, dating back to 2016-2018, rendering them invalid. He also failed to provide valid documentation for the remaining 11 cylinders. Further investigation revealed that the fitness certificate of the tempo (MH-03-DC-0960) had expired on December 31, 2020. Police stated that the accused had been illegally storing the cylinders for personal financial gain. The seized cylinders and vehicle are collectively valued at Rs93,800. Police have launched a further investigation into the case.
