New Delhi, Apr 1 (PTI) The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Wednesday took suo motu cognisance of a report alleging sexual misconduct by a police officer in Maharashtra's Akola district. The commission's chairperson, Vijaya Rahatkar, has directed the state's director general of police to ensure immediate registration of an FIR, initiate strict departmental action, conduct a fair and time-bound investigation, and undertake sensitisation measures for police personnel. A detailed action taken report was sought within seven days. According to the commission, an assistant sub-inspector allegedly demanded sexual favours from the daughter of a detainee, an act it termed a grave abuse of power and violation of human dignity. "The National Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognisance of a deeply disturbing report regarding alleged misconduct by a police officer in Akola, Maharashtra. The incident involves an Assistant Sub-Inspector who allegedly demanded sexual favours from a detainee's daughter, constituting a grave abuse of power and violation of human dignity," NCW said in a post on X.
