Chandigarh, March 30 (UNI) In a decisive move to address the increasing energy demands and sporadic LPG shortages in the state, Punjab Industry Minister Sanjeev Arora announced on Monday an ambitious plan to expand the Piped Natural Gas (PNG) infrastructure. Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh, the Minister revealed that the state government has set a target to provide 39 lakh new gas connections this year. He emphasized that the primary focus of this expansion is to safeguard the industrial sector from fuel scarcity while ensuring a seamless supply to residential areas. Minister Arora clarified that the current perceived shortage of gas in some regions is largely "artificial," triggered by panic booking. He noted that households, which previously maintained one or two cylinders, are now attempting to book multiple refills simultaneously, leading to a temporary strain on the distribution chain. Assuring the public that there is no need for alarm, he confirmed that the supply from the source remains robust and the state government is maintaining close coordination to ensure steady availability. He further pointed out that areas already integrated into the gas pipeline network are experiencing no supply disruptions. A significant highlight of the government's strategy is the extension of gas pipelines to major industrial hubs. The Minister informed that the pipeline has already reached Doraha and will soon be extended to Ludhiana and Jalandhar to cover their extensive industrial belts.
